Boil Water Notice canceled for Kilauea

LĪHUʻE – The Department of Water (DOW) has canceled the precautionary Boil Water Notice for the Kilauea Water System, effective immediately.

Laboratory results on the samples collected on September 11, 2026, indicate the water is safe for consumption. No further customer action is required at this time and customers in the Kilauea area may now resume normal water use.

The Boil Water Notice was issued as a precautionary measure following the aftermath of Hurricane Lowell.

1 p.m. (UPDATE) 09-12-2026 – URGENT REMINDER: Water conservation in effect for Kauaʻi

LĪHUʻE – The Department of Kauai (DOW) reminds its customers of the island wide water conservation notice. Water pumps are running on emergency powered generators. To avoid a water outage, DOW urges its customers to limit water to essential needs only, including cooking, drinking, personal hygiene, laundry, and sanitation. Water conservation measures include turning off fixtures and equipment that automatically draw water, such as ice machines and irrigation systems.

This notice will remain active until the conservation notice is lifted.

5 p.m. (UPDATE) 09-11-2026 Greater KILAUEA – Water service has been restored for Halaulani Road. A generator-powered booster pump is now operational, and water is moving through the system to the tap.

• 2:30 p.m. KILAUEA – Booster pump is now operational on generator power for the Kahiliholo Road area and water is now moving through the system to the tap.
• 3 p.m. KILAUEA – DOW is mobilizing a generator for Halaulani Road.

• REMINDER: Kilauea Water System – Boil Water Notice (BWN) remains in effect until further notice.

09-10-2026 Thursday Updates

7 p.m. (UPDATE) 09-10-2026 WAINIHA – A report has been received of a leak on Powerhouse Road. DOW crews were dispatched from Kilauea at 6 p.m. If it is determined that an emergency water service shutdown is necessary, customers can expect at least 3 hours for repairs to be completed.

4 p.m. to 6 p.m. 09-10-2026 (UPDATE):

KILAUEA (UPDATE) – DOW water buffalos providing potable (drinking) water will be refilled and topped off by 9 p.m. for the final refill of the night. DOW crews will return by 10 a.m. on Friday, September 11 to refill the buffalos. Reminder, Kilauea remains under a Boil Water Notice until further notice. • KILAUEA – Emergency water service shutdown on the bottom portion of Kalihiwai Road along the bay, until approximately 4 p.m.

11 a.m. (UPDATE) KILAUEA: Water service is now moving throughout the system in Kilauea Town. Once Kilauea Town is restored, greater Kilauea will begin to regenerate at the tap. Customers are reminded of the Boil Water Notice was previously released – DO NOT DRINK THE WATER FROM THE TAP without boiling it first. Bring water from the tap to a rolling boil for a minimum of 1 minute. As a reminder, regeneration can take up to 12 to 14 hours to reach all customers in the Kilauea Town area. Please continue to conserve water to essential needs only, until further notice.

10 a.m. (UPDATE) KILAUEA – Water buffalos, provided by DOW and the National Guard, continue to be staged at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center. Periodically, water tankers have to leave the location to refill. To report an empty water buffalo, please call 808-245-5400, option 1.

KILAUEA – 9 a.m. (UPDATE) KILAUEA: Water levels continue to rise as the tanks refill. Due to demand, water regeneration for this water system can take between 12 and 14 hours to reach all customers. Please continue to conserve water to essential needs only until further notice.

KILAUEA — Due to the prolonged water outage caused by Hurricane Lowell, customers on the Kilauea Water System are advised to boil all water used for drinking and cooking until further notice.

DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST.

Bring water from the tap to a rolling boil for a minimum of 1 minute, cool down and store in a sterilized/disinfected container. Alternatively, customers may add between 1-8 drops of new, unscented liquid bleach with a strength of 5-6% (like Clorox) to each gallon of water for disinfection. Fill a clean container with water, add the chlorine and let the water stand for at least 30 minutes before using. The water will have a slight chlorine odor.

Boiled, disinfected or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling and disinfection kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
