LĪHUʻE – “Imagine a Day Without Water” (IADWW) is a National Day of Action when communities nationwide pause to recognize the vital role water plays in our daily lives and the critical need to invest in aging water infrastructure to ensure access for future generations. As part of the observance, Mayor Derek Kawakami issued a proclamation declaring October 16, 2025, as “Imagine a Day Without Water 2025” in the County of Kaua‘i.

“Water connects every part of life on Kaua‘i, from our health and safety to our environment and economy. Imagine a Day Without Water reminds us how vital this resource is and why we must continue to invest in protecting it so that future generations can enjoy clean, safe, and reliable water across our island,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami.

Water is essential to everything we care about. The Department of Water (DOW) supports The Value of Water Campaign, along with the American Water Works Association (AWWA) by inviting the public to take this time to pause and reflect on the inconvenience of a day without water ¬¬– no showers, no flushing toilets, no watering gardens, no washing clothes or dishes. We also consider how water impacts fire suppression, schools, hospitals, restaurants and businesses. By imagining a day without water, we gain a deeper appreciation for this vital resource and the importance of investing in the infrastructure that delivers it to our taps.
