DOW completes repairs to Hanalei Water System
HANALEI – The Department of Water (DOW) is pleased to announce that repairs to the Hanalei Water System have been successfully completed. The repairs were finalized on Saturday, July 5, 2025.
“After overcoming significant challenges related to manufacturing, shipping and extensive repairs, the Department of Water has successfully restored the Hanalei Water System to dependable and safe operation,” stated Joe Tait, DOW’s Manager and Chief Engineer. “We commend the entire community of Hanalei and ʻAnini Beach for their commitment to conserving water during this crucial time.”
The Hanalei Water System is supplied by the Maka Ridge Well. On April 4, 2025, a pump motor failure occurred at DOWʻs Maka Ridge Pump Station, which affected the 250,000-gallon water storage tank at Maka Ridge. Fortunately, Princeville Utilities Company Inc. (PUCI) stepped in to provide water to the impacted areas of Hanalei and ʻAnini Beach. As a precautionary measure, a request for water conservation was issued, asking customers to limit their water usage to essential needs only. This request was lifted on July 5, 2025, at approximately 11:45 a.m.
DOW expresses its appreciation to Brad Suizu, PUCI manager, for his assistance in maintaining a continuous water supply to the affected areas since the incident occurred.
Additionally, DOW extends its gratitude to Derrick and Cynthia Moreira of Derrick’s Well Drilling & Pump Services LLC, for their support during this challenging time. Their ability to prioritize this project, mobilize quickly, and provide the replacement pump and appurtenances, enabled DOW to restore the Hanalei Water System to normal operations in a very short timeframe.
